Part of what makes this hard to catch is that the systems governing access to a modern website don’t all live on the website.
Hosting layers, security services, traffic management, and protection products all sit in front of the application. Each can make decisions about incoming requests independently of anything the site owner configured, and those decisions can change without warning — a vendor default updates, a rule set gets tightened, a team migrates providers.
The site owner does not receive a notification when this happens. There is no error to investigate. The configuration file they would think to check still says what it said last year.
What This Costs
Consider the ordinary sequence. A company commits to AEO. They engage a consultant. They audit and rewrite content across the site. They implement structured data. They work on consistency across platforms and build authority signals over months.
Then they measure. The results are thin. The interpretation is that the content needs more work, so the cycle repeats.
Nothing in that loop tests the assumption underneath it. A company can spend a year and a substantial budget optimizing for a system that never got through the door — and every measurement they take will be consistent with the theory that the content simply needs improving.
A Different Order Of Operations
The question that belongs first is not will AI cite me. It is can AI reach me.
That question is not answered by reading your own configuration. What a site declares and what a site does are separate facts, and only one of them can be verified from the outside.
